History of Poker
Poker is advertised everywhere these days and the reason is simple. This old fashioneded pastime is so popular it is here to stay. Most people remember poker from the the gun fighters in the saloon on tv, most probably when we were a lot younger and didn’t have much else to do.
Most players if they were honest would say that they are attracted to the game, amongst other reasons, because of the chance to win large amounts of money, or then again – not so large but on a regular basis. Poker’s popularity within recent years has increased dramatically and most people wouldn’t even know that poker has played a huge part in the gambling world for a lot of decades, and the game’s origins can be traced back for centuries. Various sources claim that poker originated around the 15th century, and was developed from a German game called Pochspiel.
Of course, there are others who claim the game actually originated in Persia and was influenced by the Persian game of Nas and even claim it was derived from the French game of Poque. No one truly knows, but as we get closer to modern time there is a more clear timeline of the events.
In 1970 poker experienced a real upsurge in the interest ratings, all because of the World Series of Poker tournaments that was staged in Las Vegas. A lot of poker strategy and poker rules books started to appear on the market and more and more people showed a keen interest for poker. The game of Texas Hold’em was introduced in the 90′s, and even more people became interested in poker because games with community cards tend to be more exciting than draw type games.
One of the major influences for poker was the 2003 televising of the World Series of Poker. One particular player who qualified to play via an online satellite, won the tournament and gave one of the times leading poker gaming sites a heck of a lot of publicity with his win. From there on in there was no looking back and it seemed like everyone and his dog was playing one kind of poker or another, be it online or at a live casino.
